Can we rent the pool?

To lesson the impact on the neighbors and the club, we only rent the pool out prior to opening before we switch to regular summer hours. Only members may rent the facilities for school groups. Click here for a detailed expanation.

What's the pool's temperature and how's this decided?

We like to think that we keep the water tempature at a level where half our members say it's too warm and half say it's too cold. This seems to be 84 degrees. This temperature recognizes that the our members use the pool in many ways. A lap swimmer usually likes the water cooler than someone who is just relaxing in the pool. Often the temperature is perceived differently depending on the weather. On a extremely hot day many swimmers like the water color; in cold days a bit wamer water might be nice. However, it's tough to heat up 230,000 gallons of water. It's even harder to cool it down. In fact, we often try to cool it off a bit if we know a heat wave is coming. During these times the challenge is to try to keep the pool from overheating. 84 is a common pool temperature not only because of comfort. Pool chemistry is very much affected by temperature. For instance, chlorine is less effective as the temperature of the water rises. (This is why hot tubs have to maintain such high levels of disinfectrant.) Scaling and water evaporation also rise with temperature.

What happens in cases of divorce? Who gets the membership?

Membership in View Ridge Swim and Tennis Club is, and always has been, based on the understanding that a membership is an indivisible privilege owned by one family living together at one residence. There is only one Membership Certificate. Unfortunately, in this modern age, divorce and familial separation is common. In the case of divorce or separation, it is not possible to have the membership “split” between former partners. Click here to view the entire policy.

My neighbor is always complaining about the club's trees. Do we have a policy for tree pruning or removal?

Yes, several years ago the Board of Directors developed a policy. You can read it here.

How is the closing date of the pool decided?

We often get asked about the closing date of the pool. Why can't it stay open longer to take advantage of the typical nice Seattle fall? The closing date is largely a function of staff availability. As older staff members go off to college, more and more responsibility is shifted to high school aged kids whose hours are restricted by state laws concerning student workers. Many of our high school kids are also involved in after school sports. The new pool takes a lot of guards - fitting all the puzzle pieces together comes increasingly impossible. It is also difficult to keep the pool in top shape when no one is there during the day. Peter cleans the dressing rooms and checks the chlorine on the way to his teaching job, but there is no one there to monitor chemicals for most of the day. If a tank runs out and we open at 3:00 - we've got problems. Pool usage also naturally drops off when schools begin and the evenings do get much colder. The increased cost of heating the pool for fewer and fewer swimmers is also a factor in closing.
