Record Investigation:
New!
|
At the 1998 SSSL Spring Meeting on March 3rd representatives voted to accept the time of 2:04.0 set by the team of Blyth, Laudenslager, Belmondo, Swanson of LR set in 1971 as the official record.
If anyone finds a faster printed time on a Prelim or Championship heat sheet or result sheet, contact Peter Klein (vrstc@halcyon.com) |
The Seattle Summer Swim League has kept records almost since its beginning in 1960. Records can only be set in a Preliminary or Championship meet.
From time to time records have been in question. So many of these discrepancies are due to typos in heat sheets. Once the mistake is made, the wrong record is often passed on from year to year. We hope that a posting on a permanent Web site will help. This should give swimmers and parents a chance to check current records and communicate quickly if mistakes are made.
Presently we are investigating the record for Event 66, the 9-10 Boys 200 Free Relay. For years it has been posted as a 2:01.67 and for almost as many years there have been voices of doubt.
Some of the heat sheets and results over the past 37 years do exist. (We hope to put together a more complete archive over the next few years. If you have old heat sheets or results from North or South Prelims, Division Championships, or All-Cities, consider making copies and sending to VRSTC, P.O. Box 51079, Seattle, WA 98115 and they will be added to the file.)
If you have any evidence or rememberences, please e-mail us. Also, have there been any Event 66 swims faster than the suggested 2:04.0?
Here's what the records show:

Recent heat sheets list the record as:2:01.67 NP Stick, Lomax, Green Merz, 1967
We have not yet been able to locate the 1967 Results.
This record has had some disbelievers. They point out:
- The time is a bit unrealistic. Each swimmer would have to average a split of 30.42. (In 1966 the winning time in the 9-10 50 Freestyle was 31.1 and in 1968 it was 32.5.)
- Several swimmers remember competing in that event. They remember losing to a fine NP team, but the times would suggest a win by almost a full pool length, not likely at a championship event.
- The time of 2:01.67 is in itself a bit suspicious. This event would have been timed using analog stop watches which recorded times to the tenths.
To date, here's what has been pieced together from limited archives:
- In 1966 the record was listed as 2:12.2 AC Fodor, Kolb, Caddey, Seignenthaler 1964*
- At the 1967 SSSL meeting a record sheet "as of the 1967 Championship Meet" was passed out compiled by Steve Dodd of Normandy Park. The record for Event 66 is listed as: 2:09.7 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The heat sheet for the 1968 SSSL Championships Meet lists the record as 2:09.7 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The heat sheet for the 1969 SSSL Championships Meet lists the record as 2:05.6 NP Pochepan, Boynton, O'Brien, Davis set in the Southern Division Meet. (In this program, host Sand Point listed pool records - in this case, NP 2:01.9 1967. This might be the beginning of the problem!)
- Heat sheet and results for the 1970 SSSL Championships Meet list no records. The SSSL record sheet handed out at the 1970 meeting lists 2:05.6 NP Pochepan, Boynton, O'Brien, Davis.
- The heat sheet for the 1971 SSSL Championship Meet lists the record as: 2:05.6 NP Pochepan, Boynton, O'Brien, Davis. The SSSL record sheet handed out at the 1971 meeting lists 2:05.6 as the record for Event 66.
- I have no heat sheets or results from 1972, but the Sheet handed out at the 1972 SSSL meeting lists a new records: 2:04.0 LR Blyth, Laudenslager, Belmondo, Swanson.
- The record sheet at the 1973 SSSL meeting lists the record as: 2:04.0 LR Blyth, Laudenslager, Belmondo, Swanson.
- My next heat sheet is from the 1975 Northern Division Meet which lists the record for Event 66 as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The 1976 All-City heat sheet list the record as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1974.
- The 1977 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The 1978 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The 1981 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967. The same record is listed on the SSSL record handout of that year.
- The 1982 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The 1983 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.9 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
- The 1986 All-City results list the records as: 2:01.67 NP Stick, Lomax, Green, Merz, 1967.
